What is Sculptra®, and how does it work?

Sculptra® is an injectable biostimulator made of poly-L-lactic acid. Instead of filling an area right away, it helps your body build its own collagen gradually, over weeks to months, usually across a series of sessions. At Clinique Le RoseWood on Nuns' Island, Montreal, it's $750 + tax for 1 vial and $1,400 + tax for 2 vials, after a consultation.

How does biostimulation work?

Sculptra® is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a material the body breaks down over time. Once it's injected under the skin, it triggers your body's own collagen production in that area. That's why it's called a biostimulator.

Right after treatment, the area can look fuller, but that's mostly water and swelling, and it fades within days. The real change comes slowly as new collagen builds, and you usually start to notice it over the following weeks to months. Results vary from person to person.

It's different from hyaluronic acid filler, which adds volume the same day. Sculptra® isn't used in the lips. For lips, see lip filler.

Who is Sculptra® for?

It can suit people who've noticed gradual volume loss or loss of firmness, for example in the cheeks, temples or along the jawline, and who'd rather see a slow, subtle change than an instant one. Our biostimulators page lists the areas we look at.

It's not for everyone. Treatment may need to wait or be avoided if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or inflammation where we'd inject, tend to form raised or keloid scars, have certain immune conditions, or are allergic to any ingredient. We go over this at your consultation.

What happens at a Sculptra® appointment?

  1. 1

Consultation. We go over your health history, your medications, past treatments and what you'd like to improve. In Québec, new patients are assessed by a physician at their first visit.

  2. 2

Plan and price. We tell you which areas, how many vials and roughly how many sessions we'd suggest, and the total, before anything is done.

  3. 3

Preparation. Sculptra® comes as a powder that's mixed with sterile water before your appointment, following the manufacturer's instructions.

  4. 4

Treatment. The skin is cleaned and the product is injected with a fine needle or a cannula. The appointment takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

  5. 5

Massage and follow-up. The area is massaged right after, and you get massage instructions for home. We see you again for your next session and to check your progress.

What are the side effects, and what's the aftercare?

Sculptra® is a medical treatment, and like any injection it has risks. Common side effects are swelling, bruising, tenderness, redness and discomfort where it was injected.

Small bumps under the skin (papules or nodules) can happen, sometimes weeks or months after treatment. Massaging as instructed is one of the ways this risk is reduced. Rare but serious complications are also possible with any facial injection, including a blocked blood vessel, infection or an allergic reaction. We review the risks with you before treatment, and you should contact the clinic right away if something doesn't feel right.

  • Massage the treated area as instructed. A common guideline is 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days (the "5-5-5" rule). Follow the exact instructions you're given.

  • Avoid intense heat, like a sauna or hot yoga, for 48 hours.

  • Mild swelling, tenderness and bruising are normal for a few days.

  • The first fullness you see is mostly water and swelling, and it fades within days. The real change builds slowly after that.

  • Come to your follow-up and next sessions, so we can check your progress.

Who does the treatment?

Injectable treatments are done by Nisrine El Hila, Head Nurse, under the medical direction of a physician. Our team works in French and English.

How the medical side works

Nisrine is a registered nurse. Before your first injectable treatment, a physician assesses you and sets your individual treatment plan. If a future treatment needs a doctor, we bring one in.
